By all accounts Pantano was one hell of a good Marine officer and an outstanding combat leader. I understand his reasoning (even with the charges not being filed after the Article 32, his career was effectively over), and I respect his decision, but I can’t help but feel a little sorry for both Lt. Pantano and the Marine Corps.
There is another issue here: trying to fight a kinder, gentler war. But that is another post. All I can now say is “thank you” to Lt. Pantano. Thank you for your service, your courage, your steadfast determination to win, your desire to take care of your men, and your willingness to do what Marines have done for centuries: ruthlessly destroy the enemy.
